Joseph Taylor (missionary)
Joseph Taylor (died 19 November 1859, Bombay), was a London Missionary Society missionary in Gujarat 〔The Missionary magazine and chronicle: Volumes 24-25 - Page 63 London Missionary Society - 1860 The following particulars of the last illness and death of Mr. Taylor are taken from the "Bombay Guardian :" — " On Saturday, the 19th inst. (November), the Rev. Joseph Taylor, for nearly forty years a Missionary in connection with the London Missionary Society, died at the residence of his son-in-law, Colonel Birdwood, on the Island. Mr. Taylor had been confined to his bed by illness for about three months...〕
Joseph Taylor may have been the son of the first LMS missionary in Gujarat, Joseph Taylor M.D., later surgeon in Bombay. He was father of J. V. S. Taylor of the Irish Presbyterian Mission, translator of the Bible into Gujarati, and grandfather of George Pritchard Taylor the grammarian of Gujarati language.
He was based in Bellary where a station had been founded by John Hands from 1812 together with Hands and William Reeve,〔Missionary register: Volume 7 - Page 37 Church Missionary Society - 1819 BELLARY. A Town in the Mysore. 1810. John Hands, William Reeve, Joseph Taylor. There are Seven Native Schools at this Station, containing about 300 Children. The Scriptures are taught in them all. It is intended to establish more.〕 then Belgaum from September 1820 till his retirement to Bombay in 1852, where he lived till his death in 1859.
